Meet Amelia AirHound

SPIRIS SPONSORS PUBLIC ART PROJECT

You’ve heard of Amelia Earhart, the famed aviator who disappeared in flight in 1937 after achieving numerous aeronautical firsts. Her quests continue to motivate many to reach for their dreams.

One so moved is West Lafayette, Ind., artist Rebecca Brody, who created Amelia Airhound for her community’s 2009 “Dog Days of Summer” public art exhibition.

Sponsored by Spiris—whose president, Dave Hutchison, shares Earhart’s passion for the skies—the fiberglass, life-size Airedale Terrier will be among dozens of creative pooches lining the streets this summer.

The exhibition is a fundraiser for and celebration of the Art Museum of Greater Lafayette’s 100th anniversary and Purdue School of Veterinary Medicine’s 50th anniversary.

“Amelia Earhart has interested me ever since I read ‘Courage is the price that life exacts for granting peace’ from her poem, ‘Courage,’” Brody says. She researched the Earhart collection at Purdue University, where the aviator worked as a counselor years ago.

Long a commercial artist, sign painter and foster parent, Brody now devotes full time to fine art.
