Fuel Exhaustion: It Might be the Last Mistake You Ever Make

Run out of gas in your car, and you'll be stuck hoofing it to the nearest gas station, calling your local AAA rep, or calling a friend for a ride. Run out of fuel in your aircraft, however, and untold tragedy can result. The tragedy is magnified, of course, because this mistake is almost always avoidable.

245 aviation accidents were caused by fuel exhaustion between 2004 and 2008, according to the NTSB, as reported last month by Salt Lake, UT television station KSL. They looked into the statistics following the crash of a small plane that left its pilot critically injured. According to the data, those 245 crashes resulted in 32 deaths. As with many things, common sense is your best defense for this common problem: follow all the safety and flight-planning procedures you learned in flight school, and don't get complacent or cocky as you gain more and more hours of flight.

Remember, even if you survive a crash landing, your aircraft will not be unscathed, and your insurance rates will undoubtedly go up.
