WHYTE HORSE WINERY

A restored 1886 farmhouse with large porches, a banquet facility that seats 75, and a cozy gazebo and garden area add ambience to the fine wines offered by Whyte Horse Winery in Monticello, Ind.

They include a baker's dozen of choices, from Chardonnay to Riesling and Seyval Blanc white wines and their holiday wine, Jingles. My favorite is the Meritage, which is a mix between a merlot and a cabernet.

Using grapes from their own vineyards and oak barrel fermentation as much as possible, this family-owned winery is known for its fruit-forward wines, which they call "a combination of love and patience."

Two brothers and their wives—Larry and Connie Pampel and Don and Denise Pamepl—operate the winery.

Whyte Horse Winery at 1510 S. Airport Road, Monticello, Ind., 574-583=2345, www.whytehorsewinery.com, is open from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m., Tuesday through Saturday, and noon to 6 p.m., Sundays.
